Barikad Crew Funerals Make History
On Saturday June 21st, 2008, tens of thousands of people participated in the funerals of the 6 members of the rap group Barikad Crew (BC). Three rappers, K-Tafalk, Deja Voo, Dade, the group’s drummer Ti Batè, and a friend, were killed on Sunday, June 15th in a terrible accident on the Airport Road in Port-au-Prince. 24 hours later, Natalie Bertrand, K-Tafalk’s girlfriend, committed suicide by shooting herself in the head.
Wearing white or red T-shirts, as well as red bandannas, the crowds which were composed of artists, politicians, and young fans, gathered on Champs de Mars where the six coffins were put on display. The ceremony was also broadcast live on television and radio.
After a short religious ceremony, well-known personalities from different backgrounds such as Wyclef Jean, the Minister of Social Affairs Gerald Germain, and artist Don Kato, took turns at the podium to pay their last respects and give their sympathies to the surviving members of the Barikad Crew, as wel as others who were close to the victims. Choruses of the most popular songs were recited by the crowd during the entire ceremony. The other members of the group have promised to continue rapping despite the tragedy.
Jean walker Sénatus (Papa K-Tafalk), Johny Emmanuel (Dade), Junior Badio (Deja-Voo aka Famous), Wilberson Magloire (Djo Ti batè) and Guichard Labranche, (Djo Ti batè) and Guichard Labranche were lost in a terrible car accident coming back from a show at the Olympia Night Club. They were headed to Radio Caraibes to celebrate the station’s 50th anniversary.

Funérailles, Barikad Crew rentre dans l’histoire
Une foule immense, des dizaines de milliers selon les médias, a assisté samedi dernier au Champ de Mars aux funérailles collectives des six membres du groupe rap Barikad Crew (BC).Trois chanteurs du groupe K-Tafalk, Déjà Voo, Dade, un musicien Ti batè et un ami ont été tués le dimanche 15 juin 2008 dans un terrible accident de voiture sur la route de l’aéroport. 24 heures plus tard, Natalia Bertrand, la femme de Katafal, le leader du groupe, s’est suicidée en logeant une balle dans la tête.
Portant des T-shirts blancs ou rouges et des mouchoirs rouges, la foule composée d’artistes, de membres du gouvernement, d’hommes politiques et de jeunes …s’était massée de très tôt au Champ de Mars où les six cadavre étaient exposés. La cérémonie funéraire célébrée par des prêtes épiscopaliens a été aussi suivie en directe par le reste de la population à travers la télévision nationale et des radios privées qui la retransmettait en direct.
Après la courte cérémonie religieuse, des personnalités venues d’horizon divers dont Wyclef Jean, le ministre des Affaires sociales, Gérald Germain, Don Kato, se sont défilées sur le podium pour témoigner leurs sympathies aux membres du Barikad Crew et aux proches des victimes. Les refrains les plus populaires du groupe ont été entonnés par la foule tout au long de la cérémonie. Les autres membres du groupe ont, de leur côté, promis de continuer à chanter malgré le drame.
