Anti-Martelly Demonstrations - 11.18.13

Haiti was rocked by anti-government demonstrations on November 18th which were basically a continuation of relatively smaller demonstrations over the past couple of weeks. On the anniversary of the Battle of Vertieres, a decisive battle in Haitian history, people have decided to rise up and express their disappointment with the Martelly administration.

Haiti Helicopter Tour

When I was invited to take a helicopter tour of Southwestern Haiti by my friend Cleve Mesidor, I jumped at the chance. I picked Cleve up early one morning and we headed through Port-au-Prince rush-hour traffic down to the airport, where we boarded a government helicopter and took off… The result was several hours of stunning aerial footage of Haiti’s south and this video that Cleve and I prepared for the Haitian Times.

Why Do We Always Nit-Pick French Grammar?

Why do we Haitians always nit-pick French grammar? We seem to do this much more so than the French and Americans do for their respective languages. I’ve seen entire online conversations get derailed because someone erroneously used an “accent aigu” instead of an “accent grave”, or made a slight error in applying the correct tense or grammatical conjugation. Of course there are situations where even the slightest grammatical errors are unacceptable, but sometimes we just can’t seem to shake that “I’m-still-in-school” mentally where the most inconsequential errors need to be corrected.
