MONTREAL — A Superior Court Justice gave Edens Kenol a stern lecture Thursday after a jury found the man guilty of first-degree murder in the stabbing death of his estranged wife, the mother of their three children.

"You've committed a cowardly, horrible and violent act," Justice Michael Stober told Kenol as he stood emotionless in the prisoner's box. "You wanted to control and dominate your ex-wife, you couldn't control and dominate your ex-wife, and because of this you deprived your children of their mother but also of their father.

"So because of you, your children have no parents."

Kenol, 37, was handed an automatic life sentence, with no chance of parole until he's served 25 years in prison.

Maria Altagracia Dorval, 28, was found on the back balcony steps of her upper duplex in Montreal North on Oct. 17, 2010. Her three young children, then age 10, 6 and 2, were staying at Dorval's cousin's house. The children are now in the care of their maternal grandparents, who attended parts of the trial.

In his testimony, Kenol never denied killing Dorval, but said he didn't mean to do it.

Their relationship turned sour when Kenol lost his job; the couple lost their house and had to move into an apartment.

When Dorval announced she wanted out of the relationship, Kenol sought help from friends to talk her out of it. He called her about 50 times a day. Two months before he stabbed her to death, he showed up at her apartment and threatened to kill her if she left him.

The case raised the public's ire because of the apparent indifference toward Dorval by police and resulted in five members of Montreal's police force being called before the police ethics committee. Dorval made a written statement to police on Aug. 16, 2010 - two months before she was killed - in which she said Kenol came to her apartment about midnight and threatened her. He yelled at her and said he had been thinking of killing her, the children and himself.

The hearings before the committee have been postponed because the contract of the chairwoman was not renewed by the government.
