In Haiti you will hear and watch music from Barikad Crew’s album on an almost 24hour basis on the radio and television.
Young people from all over the country are swarming to the scene of the horrific accident which took the lives of 5 people, including 3 members of the Barikad Crew, the most popular rap group in Haiti with record album sales, and a very loyal following.
In the seaside neighborhood of Carrefour, there were reports of young people attempting to throw themselves to the sea in desperation caused by the loss of the members of this group who meant so much to them. The fiancée of the lead member, Papa Katafal, who was several months pregnant has already committed suicide, and the mother of another goup member is reportedly hospitalized and undergoing medical treatment due to the shock of hearing of her son’s death.

This is a very sad situation, but I don't understand people's desperation to the point of throwing themselves to the sea. The fiancée commited suicide with a baby in her womb! This is the worst thing she could have done to Papa Katafal. If she had any love for the man, she would give birth to the baby and raise him/her to become a man/woman of honor, in honor to his/her father. I don't care at all about that lady! I feel that she lost fame and money, then she killed herself. She killed the baby's father a second time!
Haitian youth has a bigger problem than we think! The desperation and its cause are much more profund than we might think.
I am waiting for all the "nuclear bombs", and I am also convinced all those who can talk out of emotion and passion will understand my feelings!!
We're talking about young people here.... and young people in Haiti at that. The fiancee who killed herself was only 22 I beieve. The other kids who attempted to drown themselves could not have been much older/younger. When you've got absolutely no prospects for the future, you cling very tightly to whatever you can... whatever gives you hope. When that thing is snatched away, it will be easy for many people to think that they have nothing to live for.
For some Haitian youth who may lack maturity and find it impossible to see anything in their futures, this feeling of hopelessness can come even more easily.

They are adults! Do not try to justify any nonsense. The band was not and could not be the only reason those people have to live. Was BC the only band in Haiti? Come on!
You are ridiculous and you are talking out of your ass. Of course this is not the only reason she committed suicide. People who commit suicide usually have a slew of problems, but it only takes one thing to bring them over the edge. (Aren't you in the medical field or something? I would hate to come to you for counseling.)
In the case of the fiancee, this was it. She may have had problems with depression, may have lacked self-esteem, etc. Who knows.
Also, just because you are 22 or 24, doesn't give you the same experience in life as someone who is 30, 40...or even 60
Tibobo, I see where you're coming from about the fiance, but the brain works in the most mysterious ways. WE can think logical about this and say it makes no sense that she killed herself but of course she wasn't in the right frame of mind, as we are, to think that makes her want to live even more. You understand! It's easier said and done cause we are outside looking in.
As for the youth, I'm not surprised, cause here in the states if you hear of just one kid who committed suicide or die from a fatal car accident, the next day you have a whole bunch of psychologist swarm that kid's school and community making themselves available to talk to kids or for the kids to talk to them about how the death of their classmates/friends are affecting them and how to cope. Haiti, on the other hand, I don't hear any talk of psychologists organized by the government to help the youth. Kids in Haiti are no different from kids in 1st world countries. Please keep that in mind!
Dying is easy. It's the living that's hard. Fifty lifted those lines and those kids in Haiti should know them. Maybe you can tell me what it is these young people have lost? When you are young, you have everything to live for. I have known much greater and personal adversity in my life and I will always choose life.

I 100% agree with what you've said. I too don't care for that lady at all!
I don't agree with suicide, especially when it's your boyfriend who died. Ever since I learned that she was pregnant, it made it worse and I want to cuss that b***** out so badly. I know that may seem insensitive to some of you, but I don't have an ounce of sympathy for someone who deliberately killed an innocent life (if she was several months pregnant and people knew about it, that meant she intended to have it and that was a life to her) and who deliberately inflicted more grief on Papa Katafalk's family, her family and friends. That is not what Katafalk would have wanted her to do at all. At least I'm assuming because that's the humane thing. People, loved ones, die everyday. She wasn't alone. Some people lose several at the same time. Some lose them in even more desperate conditions and they don't commit suicide. Why couldn't she at least wait until the baby's birth? I doubt she would have wanted to off herself then, but if she still wanted to that would be her business. Was she too distraught that her meal ticket was gone? She didn't want to go back to mizè? Don't bother cussing me out for being an insensitive b; I can't help what I think and all I can think of since yesterday is "what a c***!"

Very well said Stamina! Your argumentation is quite logical and it's clear you are not talking out of passion. I thank you. Not all brains work the same. That's why we have crazy people!

Come back when your passion is down and your feelings can be controlled! That will help you reason and show respect to people who show the same to you. Whenever we cannot argue, we start insulting. That's the wrong attitude.

Papaille, your writings have become very philosophical these days! I would say surrealist!
We hear people trying to justify those kids who want to throw themselves at the sea. How could a fiancée kill herself when she is months pregnant and her man died? If the man were in a situation where he were in danger with his fiancée, what would he do? Pull the fiancée to safety or die with her?
I too believe the youth of Haiti is in trouble, and there is a deeper psychological problem lurking at the surface. I understand the grief and I more than understand that these young guys were heroes to them all: the no-names, the no-advantages, the dreamers, the hopeful. It's all understandable.
I've always understood that Haitians were especially strong people. At least the older generation. Maybe it's being lost on the younger one. I can't pretend to understand it at all because the Haitians I've known were the ones who would have held on no matter what, choosing life. Even in the most desperate conditions. I guess through it all, whatever horrific tragedy I may end up going through, I thank God I have my mother who's shown me just what strengths the Haitian woman is capable of.
