I've read that sometimes celebrities use charity organization as an occasion to expand their market and increase their exposure. For a rapper such as Common or even Wyclef, it's an opportunity to be featured by the likes of CNN and People magazine as opposed to being limited to hip hop and urban publications. He is trying to raise $50,000 for his organization. The last time I checked, less than 2000$ had been donated. Which makes me wonder, why go through all that trouble, why not donate 50,000 of own money and be done with it? And don't give me that bologna about bringing awareness to the issue because the problem is not due to a lack of awareness. To be fair it's much better than the usual sponsoring of basketball games for urban kid, when what they really need are better schools and tutoring programs.
I also think he is (was?) dating Serena to get his name out there.
