9 Bad Habits That Are Hurting Your Skin

The hardest thing about beauty is that it's rarely as simple as we try to make it out to be. Even if you do all the things you're supposed to do to get healthy-looking hair and skin, there are any number of bad habits that can negate all of your good efforts.

Acne, the term for what's commonly called pimples or zits, occurs when oil, bacteria, and dead skin cells clog hair follicles. People with oily skin may be more susceptible to pimples because of their acne-prone skin, but breaking bad habits can still help them — and everyone else — prevent acne.

Want gorgeous skin? Start by making sure you don't commit any of these skin-damaging crimes that can result in pimples and blemishes.

Bad Habit No. 1: Washing your skin too often

Though it's important to keep your skin clean, washing it too often will only make acne worse. Instead, wash your face in the morning when you wake and at night before bed.

Bad Habit No. 2: Vigorously scrubbing your skin

Scrubbing your skin with a washcloth, loofah, or harsh exfoliant will cause significant irritation — and may worsen your acne-prone skin. To prevent acne, always wash with only lukewarm water and a gentle cleanser.

Bad Habit No. 3: Not cleaning sweaty skin

After you've had a tough workout or been outside in the hot sun, your skin may be covered with sweat. Don't let it dry onon your skin — instead, always bathe or wash your skin promptly after sweating.

Bad Habit No. 4: Picking at your skin and popping your pimples

While it may be irresistible to pick or pop pimples, these behaviors can cause increased redness from squeezing the pus deeper into the skin and sometimes even scarring. Instead, keep your hands off your face and let pimples go back down to size with the help of an anti-acne lotion or cream.

Bad Habit No. 5: Skipping the shampoo

If you've got oily hair, that oil can seep down onto your face — and cause pimples. Make sure you wash your hair often enough to keep excess oil off of your forehead, face, and back to help prevent acne.

Bad Habit No. 6: Getting hair products on your face

It's important to keep hair spray, gel, mousse, or other hair products off your face to prevent them from clogging up your pores. Cover your face when applying these products to keep them on your hair and off your skin.

Bad Habit No. 7: Eating greasy foods

While the food that you eat doesn't cause acne, greasy foods can make acne-prone skin worse because of the excess oil and grease that can get on the skin from the food itself. So stick to a healthy diet without greasy, fried foods to spare your skin — and your health.

Bad Habit No. 8: Using cosmetics that contain oil

If you've got acne-proneacne-prone skin, the last thing you want to do is introduce even more oil. When you buy makeup and other skin products, look for oil-free options labeled with the terms "non-acnegenic" or "non-comedogenic" to help prevent acne.

Bad Habit No. 9: Stopping your acne treatment

If you're using prescription acne medications for your pimples, it's great news when your skin starts to clear up. But that doesn't mean you're free to stop using your medication. To keep a recurrent breakout at bay, finish all of your prescription acne medications as recommended by your doctor unless directed otherwise.

Replace your bad skin care habits and practices with good ones to help bring acne under control. With a few simple changes, your skin — not your pimples — will be glowing.

Beauty is not only on the outside but on the inside too. Health and happiness plays into it.

Diet : Diet plays a very important role in helping us to remain young. We must have a balanced diet. We are what we eat. What we eat reflects on our skin and body. First develop a regular eating habit like eating at a proper time. Include lot of raw vegetables and fruits in your diet. Avoid junk food and fried food. Sugar makes you look older, so you can substitute sugar with honey and fruits. Include five servings of fruits and vegetables in your diet. Red, yellow, orange, fruits and vegetables and greens are rich in antioxidants which helps us to delay aging. Green tea is rich in antioxidant and also strengthens our resistance against diseases. Include almonds, olive oil (use it as a cooking medium) fenugreek, in your diet as they are rich in antioxidants and helps to slow down the aging process. As we grow older, we must stick to simple and easily digestible food. One can observe fasting to detoxify oneself after consulting the doctor. People who eat a nutritious diet remain younger, tend to age slower, look trim, healthier and are more active than others.

Yoga : The age old tradition of yoga is said to have emerged in India some 5000 yrs ago. It is one of the surest ways to age gracefully, if practiced regularly. It gives flexibility to the body, prevents age related diseases, improves immunity and slows aging of the skin, thereby helping us to remain young. In yoga, it is said that the more flexible the spine is, the more youthful the person is. Yoga improves the flexibility of the spine and increases the elasticity of our body. It gives a good figure, improves blood circulation, energizes you and helps you to remain young and fit. Not only does yoga has physical benefits but also psychological benefits. It improves our self confidence. Learn yoga only from a good, qualified yoga teacher. Pranayama (breathing techniques) is very beneficial to the body and the mind and it oxygenates our cells and helps us to remain young.

Sleep : Good sound sleep not only rejuvenates our body but also strengthens our immunity to various diseases thereby helping us to remain young.

Massage : It is skin which shows our age. So keep your skin hydrated and moisturized. Massage your skin with sweet almond oil or coconut oil once in a fortnight to delay aging. Massage helps us to feel relaxed and energizes us. It improves blood circulation and keeps your skin wrinkle free. Do not massage when your stomach is full or when you are sick.

Mental Health : Always keep yourself engaged. Read a book, do crossword puzzles, sudoku to keep your brain active. Enjoy friendships, foster good relationship with family members, learn a new hobby, maintain interest as these will help to reduce stress and make you feel happy. Be optimistic in life and learn to forgive others. Dress well, love yourself, try to have a new look as it makes you feel happy and helps you to remain young. By having Strong family ties, good friendships, healthy diet, good mental health and staying physically active, one can age gracefully.

27 Healthy Habits of Happiness

27-habits-of-happiness.jpg

How do we heighten our happiness? There are many ways and one size does not fit all. Below I discuss what has worked for me and those closest to me – how a small group of us went from downbeat and drained to a happy and hopeful in a few short years.

1. Look for happiness in the right places. – When we’re young we look for happiness in drugs, sex, alcohol, parties, fast cars, extreme sports, etc. Then when we get a little older, we look for happiness in more ‘mature’ ways – a stable partner, romantic getaways, walks along the beach, jazz music, a night at the bar with some friends. Do they work? Do these things make us happy? Sure they do. They raise our happiness temporarily. But people have a baseline of inner happiness. Certain events and possessions, like an unexpected windfall, might raise or lower our happiness momentarily, but soon we return to our inner baseline. The key is to gradually raise this baseline. Enjoy the moment, but don’t completely ignore long-term goals. What will you be proud to have accomplished, or disappointed that you didn’t do, five years from now? Read The Happiness Project.

2. Acknowledge the lesson is every situation. – Everything is a life lesson. Everyone you meet, everything you encounter, etc. They’re all part of the learning experience we call ‘life.’ Never forget to acknowledge the lesson, especially when things don’t go your way. If you don’t get a job that you wanted or a relationship doesn’t work, it only means something better is out there waiting. And the lesson you just learned is the first step towards it.

3. Be authentic. Be true to yourself. – Judy Garland once said, “Always be a first rate version of yourself instead of a second rate version of somebody else.” Live by this statement. There is no such thing as living in someone else’s shoes. The only shoes you can occupy are your own. If you aren’t being yourself, you aren’t truly living – you’re merely existing.

4. Move your thoughts beyond obstacles. – Ralph Waldo Emerson said, “To different minds, the same world is a hell and a heaven.” Put in an effort to both seek out happiness-boosting experiences and learn to appreciate what you find. There will always be negative obstacles. This will never change. If you focus on them, your world will become Emerson’s hell. The real trick is to learn how to keep moving amidst these obstacles – acknowledging that they’re simply a part of life – and continually seek out or construct experiences that make you happy.

Be a part of something you believe in. – This could be anything. Some people take an active role in their local city council, some find refuge in religious faith, some join social clubs supporting causes they believe in, and others find passion in their careers. In each case the psychological outcome is the same. They engage themselves in something they strongly believe in. This engagement brings happiness and meaning into their lives.

Avoid negativity and negative people. – Don’t belittle yourself and don’t put up with people who try to belittle you.

Instead of searching for passion, live passionately now. – Sometimes we get so wrapped up in ‘finding ourselves’ or ‘finding our passion’ that we forget how this discovery is actually made: By living passionately now. In other words, if you want to find out where your true passions lies, stop looking and simply start living each day with passion and zeal. If you do, self-discovery will come naturally.

Savor the joy of simple pleasures. – I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, the best things in life are free. They come in the form of simple pleasures and they appear right in front of you at various locations and arbitrary times. They are governed by Mother Nature and situational circumstance and captured by mindful awareness. It’s all about taking a moment to notice the orange and pink sunset reflecting off the pond water as you hold hands with someone you love. Noticing these moments and taking part in them regularly will bring unpredictable bursts of happiness into your life.
