Dual Citizenship: Dream or Reality? In this premiere episode of Spotlight on Haiti guest host Alice Backer discusses the issue of dual citizenship with guests, Jocelyn McCalla, Ilio Durandis and Reginald Toussaint. Did President Martelly make a promise he's not able to keep? What is on the horizon for Haitians living abroad who one day dream of having dual citizenship? Why is this topic so important to many Haitians living abroad? What is at stake if this constitutional amendment doesn't get passed?

The day dual citizenship law gets passed is the day Haiti becomes the world's leading superpower. In other words, your in a deep state of REM sleep and you haven't waken up out of your dreamland fantasy. I may be the most avid advocate for passing dual citizenship, but I just do not see it happening under the Martelly Administration. The guy has been nothing but hot air, he hasn't REALLY done anything but barely start projects that are not going to be completed. I can't stress enough that his main and only priority is building SUSTAINABLE ENERGY (LNG mostly) for Haiti. If anything, he made the status of Haiti worse. Anyone who read this would you please help with pushing ENERGY into Martelly's only agenda. I've contacted Alstom Comelex, the French firm who was apparently rehabilitating the Peligree dam on an inquiry in regards to the project, and surprise surprise almost four months and no reply. Individuals who reads this post, will you be so kind enough to help spread the word out there to get SUSTAINABLE ENERGY to Martelly single, most pressing issue. Thanks.

What good reason do you have for backing dual citizenship in Haiti? As stated before you can still do for your country without dual citizenship. If you really want to be a Haitian citizen there are steps for that as well.

You can own property in Haiti if you are not a Haitian citizen. What's your other point? As a non-Haitian citizen you are limited on how much property you can own. That is a sub-set of the whole story.

If you watch both videos it does state that. Perhaps you should ask the forum just to be clear as to what you can or cannot do as a non-Haitian citizen.

Key word LIMITED. I was born in Haïti to Haïtian parents, so I feel entitled to ALL of my liberties as a Haitian.

You are still Haitian. YOU choose not to be a "full" Haitian by opting to not regain your Haitian citizenship.

You are allowed to turn in your adopted citizenship if you are naturalized or were born outside of Haiti's borders.

It is your choice.

Right, only an idiot would renounce a German citizenship for a Haitian one!

patjlouis, you seem to want dual citizenship for selfish reasons. You want to have your cake and eat it too. If you were really concerned about dual citizenship for Haiti's sake, you shouldn't have a problem renouncing your German citizenship to become Haitian. Otherwise, just try to do as much as you can from where you sit! You don't have to be Haitian in order to help Haiti. Look at all the white people who have a real impact on Haiti. Are they all Haitian?...No!

Of course Haiti should have dual citizenship. It's not practical to not have it. What are they protecting??? I have heard no valid argument against it.

Then it is not that important to you, being German is, so stay "German".
