Because most military recruits are in their 20s.

Maximum age to enlist:
Army - 35
Air Force - 27
Navy - 34
Marines - 28
Coast Guard - Age 27.

Indeed!

The body is fit and mind is malleable.

The perfect combination.

But, there are a LOT of very young men dying on a daily basis in Afghanistan.

I've tried to reconcile in my mind how I as a parent would accept my child's death knowing that his efforts were in vain.

Setting an exit date from Afghanistan, and leaving it to the Taliban to takeover, would be a very hard pill to swallow for sure.

What is it for?

There is NO progress in Afghanistan.

And yet, these young men just keep dying.

Brutal.

Jesus! When is it going to stop!
