Since late April 2012, a new treatment of wastewater is operational in Haiti. With this new station, the National Directorate of Water Supply and Sanitation (DINEPA) has reached a new milestone in the development of infrastructure to meet the needs of the population in terms of sanitation. The work of this station started in the year 2010 to meet the needs of the population, especially after January 12, 2010 and the introduction of cholera. The inauguration of this site is scheduled for May 23. Funded by the Spanish Agency for International Development (AECI), the treatment plant wastewater, will collect and treat liquid wastes from sewage, accommodation camps, treatment centers and those of cholera pits sunk in the metropolitan area of Port-au-Prince. It can receive daily 500 cubic meters of excreta. Covering an area of 2 acres, this resort is equipped with 7 pools: two anaerobic ponds or primary settling tank, a settling basin or optional secondary, a basin of maturation , a control basin, a basin for receiving solid waste from excreta and a seventh for the reception and other oils. For the technical side, the lagoon treatment system has been prioritized. This system, commonly used for waste water, was effective, natural and less expensive than other systems such as: the system of Anaerobic Baffled Reactor and the activated sludge system.
