Hey, is anyone paying attention to the 2012 Olympic Games to start this July in London
That spectacle seems to be getting less important with time.

Breaking Ties Is Complicated
By JACK BELL
Published: June 14, 2012
So you think you know the tiebreaking procedure in the group stage of the European Championships as the third round of matches approaches?
Think again.
Unlike the accepted, though perhaps disliked, reliance on goal differential to break ties, a system used in group and league play in the World Cup, Champions League and myriad other domestic and international competitions, UEFA’s system this time has tossed a curve. And it is a curve that has confused many people, including the in-game announcers and studio staff at ESPN.
In a nutshell, the first method for breaking deadlocks is head-to-head results when two teams are tied on points.
They changed the rules for Euro 2012...so Greece advances instead of Russia which is leading in goal differential.

Unfortunately for us.... Greece is one of the most boring team to look play.
JC Let's presume A Easy win of Germany over Denmark.. Who will be the second team to continue their race
Netherlands or Portugal? Netherlands needs a 2-0 win

that is a great little math problem.
Let say Germany beats Denmark and Netherlands does win 2-0 against Portugal......then we would have the following
Germany: 9pts.... +3gd or more
Portugal: 3pts.....+1gd
Netherlands: 3pts.... 0gd
Denmark: 3pts.....-1gd or less
So Germany and Portugal would advance under the old rule.
But with the change, we now have a three way tie based solely on points.
"When more than two teams are tied on points, the points won among those teams will determine which team(s) advance.
Still tied? Then goal differential will be used. And if teams are still tied, goals scored will break that tie. And still tied?
The more obscure tiebreakers, from the tournament’s official competition rules, section 8.07:
¶ Position in the UEFA national team ranking system (don’t ask!);
¶ Fair play conduct of the teams (final tournament);
¶ Drawing of lots."
Based on points earned among the three teams,
Denmark: 3 pts.
Portugal: 3 pts.
Netherlands: 3 pts.
then goal differential among the three
Netherlands: 3
Denmark: 0
Portugal: -1
OK, now I have a migraine...lol

Half time....both games tied 1 -1
If nothing changes, Germany and Portugal advance.
