Haitian Mayor Lashes Out as U.S. Ban on Dried Mangoes
Monday, 11 June 2012 11:12

GROS-MORNE, Haiti (defend.ht) - A dried mango plant in Gros-Morne was caused to close due to the decision of the United States to ban the sale of dried mangoes from Haiti, a decision Vice Mayor Beauger Rubin calls a "slap in the face," to Haitian local production.

Hygiene conditions in the treatment of mangoes were not at the taste of U.S. authorities according to the decision-makers.

Vice Mayor Rubin of the township of Gros-Morne in the Upper Artibonite, did not digest the prohibition of the sale of dried mangoes from Haiti in the U.S.

In an interview Rubin expressed regret for the U.S. decision and said that it has forced producers in the city to lose an important market for its delicious mangoes.

"It is a blow to local authorities who have opened a plant for drying mangoes," said the deputy mayor. "Due to this measure, the Gros Morne plant was closed, the U.S. is a major potential customer to sell this product..."

"Dried mangoes exported to the U.S. by a previous company," he says, "had never caused health problems in the U.S. population."

Beauger Rubin wonders why every time the Haitian authorities take measures to lift the people out of poverty, there are always other institutions (national or international) that react adversely.

"The hygiene problem raised by the United States to prohibit the sale and consumption of dried mangoes from Haiti, is a false problem... this is a slap to the Haitian people" said the Deputy Mayor.

If the misery of Haiti’s poor is not caused by their nature, but by institutions, great is the sin.

Another example of why Gunner screams: INFRASTRUCTURE!

Anybody who thinks Martelly is doing a good job is a fool!

He's done NOTHING, and plans NOTHING, in terms of infrastructure development on a scale necessary to pull Haiti out of poverty.

Small scale, K-Street connected, infrastructure is nothing but a ruse to keep the natives quiet.

This will be a perpetual problem given the current situation.

Thank God we're focused on hotels and tourism; that'll bring needed infrastructure someday.

Now! Back to the zombie!

I think he means the income from mangoes is good revenue for the government and people.

A ban on one agricultural product is a signal of more to come.

Many feel that since Haitian authorities are trying to control illegal entry of dominican products across the border, the USA is retaliating against Haitians.

Not that easy, we're staying on topic.

USA was purchasing this product from Haiti......then stops abruptly.....

If you want to praise USA "favorable" attitude toward Haitians.....we'll take it to one of Gunner's threads......this one won't go off topic.

After the quake the USA got good publicity for promising to improve the mango industry in Haiti.......and now the first hit, no dried product.

A poster questioned what was meant by "lifting people out of poverty" ...... I gave my opinion of the highlighted including the part dealing with "adverse international reaction"......

Back on topic.

BULL. Further evidence that any attempt at local production instead Of importing every freaking thing is penalized. I think en devant might be onto something. You can't go from buying dried mangoes for years with no problems then suddenly stop all for no reason. If hygienic reasons stops the U.S from buying items then China would be boycotted by now. Something is up.

Hey you said the US is retaliating against Haitians...not me.

Anyway, where is the private sector in all this. The government cant do everything. They want to make the money but don't invest to make it happen.

What investment are you talking about?

Haiti was already selling this dried product to USA.......then it stops.....abruptly.

Unlike you I don't think it's a big conspiracy. I believe that standards were not met.

The already weak govt in Haiti can't do everything.

The small group that controls mangoes in Haiti should protect their industry by investing and making sure that this type of thing does not happen.

Unlike you, I don't think Haitian business people would ignore warnings from american importers that if X is not changed then Y will happen.

It is called: "fruit flies" or fecal matter beyond acceptable limits on the dried fruit.

Those sorts of things get you stopped "abruptly".

When the dried fruit handlers have no access to a commode, clean water or toilet paper; shit happens!

More than likely it was fecal matter that put a stop to it.

Get focused people. Think!

What would your hands look like without toilet paper, clean water or a commode?

Yes, it's an ugly thought, but it is what it is.
