Calling for volunters and donations!

During the summer of 2011, I was invited by Ruddel Deceus to document a health fair taking place in L'Acule du Nord, not too far from the northern city of Cap-Haitien, in the shadow of the Citadelle fortress. After a very short airplne ride to "Okap" (Cap-Haitien) from Port-au-Prince, I was met at the airport, and eventually wound up at the health fair which was already in full swing. The second annual health fair will be taking place later this summer. Those who are interested in particiating or donating to the effort can contact Ruddel Deceus at (718)804-8835 or .

Health Fair?

WTF are you people talking about?

Do you not understand what is going on with Haitian Health care?

It is shit!

We need a "fair" to highlight it?

Patients do not have clean linens, toilets, or clean water.

And we're all excited about a "health fair"?

Jesus Christ!

The people I met in Okap were very excited. I was just there for a couple of days, but the fair went on for over a week, and they saw hundreds of people. Many of the people who were seen by the volunteer doctors were very sick and can't afford to wait for Haiti's health care system to get fixed.

Coolp,

I get all of that.

Haitian Nationals will line up for several hours to receive a Tylenol for an undiagnosed ailment and thank the Dr. for it.

They will wait several hours to be given a vitamin pill for dysentery because the "hospital" has nothing else to give them, and they will be grateful for it.

Sadly, Haitian Nationals will be grateful for anything offered to them from a "hospital" or doctor..

They have no comparison to draw from, so ANYTHING seems "helpful".

Bernard Mevs is the only trauma "hospital" in P au P to speak of and they have no toilets, clean water, nor clean linens for the patients.

But at the break of dawn, morning after morning, Haitian Nationals line up for "health care"; hundreds of them!

Why? Because where else can they go?

That's how dire the situation is in Haiti relative to health care.

And our president and PM say nothing about it.

It's surreal.

PIH is building a new hospital 35 miles away in Mirebalais, and right next door to another brand new hospital in Mirebalais, makes no sense!

Yet, the media says nothing about this strange anamoly, or questions Dr Farmer, as to why he did this when P au P is starved for hospitals.

Gunner, I totally understand where you are coming from. It's frustrating to see small steps taken when we all know that there is so much more to be done. But at the same time, these people who were being helped know nothing about Clinton, Soros, or Hospitals in Mirebalais. All they know is that they have a sick child, a headache, and are seeking 'soulajman'. Many of them haven't seen a doctor in years, if ever, and are eagerly awaiting for the health fair to return.

So, I rather adopt a positive attitude about the little things that are accomplished, without becoming complacent, or losing sight of the bigger picture, and the things that have yet to be done.
