This is an outrage and a slap in the face of all negro women.

You signed the petition?
At least it's one of the many attempts to thwart holywood's thinking... before Nina Simone gets immortalized in such likeness. Before you know it all her songs will belong only to white female vocalist..to a point where they'd make it into a strange phenomena should any Black female vocalist sings Nina's songs.
They re-colorized Jesus Christ beyond belief... Where anyone who'd attempt to suggest that Jesus Christ was of any skin color other than Anglo white , Blonde silky long VO5 hair and blue eyes would seem out of normal thinking.
Martin Luther King seems to be looking whiter every year or every other on many of portraits depicting him... check out some school books ....

Good post Mr.J.C.

Thank You Milktree, but this is not a black versus white issue.

This is a black versus mulato issue.....or the mulatorization of historical black figures.

As for the songs, Nina sung many songs by white artists.

As for the semitic Jesus...he probably looked like today's arabs....but then again who cares.

The real issue is that casting that mulatta latina as negro nina is simply disrespectful and will take away from her life story.....and the role played by her racial appearance.

My natural choice for that role would be...

My choice would be Macy Gray... Not only for her looks, but also for the unapologized ways she expresses the emotional contents found in many of her songs. Besides she's already acted on many occasions for the big screen... I think Macy and Nina Simone rotate around a similar emotional sphere. Also think that humor, character nuances and slants in performances of Nina Simone could be carried very well by Gray...

I also think Macy Gray has the necessary vocal range, though she's adorned with a unique voice. She keeps it real and does not try to be what she is not, as did Nina Simone. Obviously I am a Fan of Nina as well of Macy.... Anyway, Here's what she does in a Metallica song.

Here's Nina Simone putting her own emotional slant on these popular songs:

Nina Simone, an earlier version of Four Women:

Does anyone else find that Macy Gray does somehow rotate on a similar emotional axis with Nina Simone in performance & delivery? I think Macy Gray be great to cast in the role of Nina Simone.

A good choice. I have never seen Arie in a "film". She favors Nina more, both sexy in their own right; so too Gray.

I failed to notion your choice of Arie, simply because of my lengthy post. Arie could also bring lots of great potential to that table; besides her looks, I do believe the India Aire's name would be very marketable. She may even have a larger niche at this time.. However, I do not find the exhibited similarities in her character nuances to Nina's in her performance. Even with minimal acting ability, with a good character director she may come off good to carry the necessary credibility to the part... Yes!!! She could indeed be good a contender. Much much better than the one being considered by Hollywood now.
