I personally have been having a bad year, financially. Another HX member recently gave me the following advice: Get out of bed, get dressed, get a job, and move on my Haitian brotha....move on! Unfortunately, things are not that simple. Were I a factory worker, or seeking employment in fast food or other unskilled endeavor, I suppose it would be sound advice. Family and friends want me to teach; I am not feeling it. I have depleted my 401K to meet the near $20,000.00 per month it takes to run my household. I have a cousin living in my luxury condo for which I pay the mortgage and association fees and for which he pays no rent, not even half the amount I spend which is all I ask of him: bitch ass Haitian nigger! I have a brother and friends who owe me thousands of dollars, yet I am unable to get even a few hundred a month from them: more bitch ass Haitian niggers! My only saving grace at this time is the fact that I withdrew my savings from the market although my tax burden was high because today "the fit hit the shan". Here are the results as of this hour:
Updated: 4:30 pm ET, September 15
Dow 10,917.51 -504.48 (-4.42%)
Nasdaq 2,179.91 -81.36 (-3.60%)
S&P;1,192.70 -59.00 (-4.71%)
I have sought employment all over the US since most professionals are hired via the internet today and nothing has come through. I am of course older and command a higher salary although I am willing to take a pay cut; still nothing. The bad news today does not bode well for me and others in my situation. Tell me: how are you doing?
I am being proactive...calling clients before they call me.....hand holding...reassuring...reviewing...empathizing....nervous laughter.
People are scared.
Having gone thru the tech bust I am a little less on edge with this financial sector debacle.....but you still get that knot in your stomach.
The truth is the industry has become so complex that neither the government nor the industry leaders fully understand it. We have derivatives backed by derivatives backed by derivatives.....and so on.
My main concern is AIG.....we decided to no longer use them....if others follow suit, the company will be downgraded and will be unable to raise cash.....then any scenario is possible.
A major overhaul is needed.
As for my own funds I am down 12.6% YTD....I am not crying.
Papaille: why is a family member staying in one of your units free of any charge????????????????? unless it's mom or dad...you need tp put your foot down.

Holy s@#$!!!
I have some investments here and there but I don't mess too much with the stock market.....I'm too young to be having headaches and stressing out. I'll leave that to the ballers.......
Right now.....I'm having issues with Food prices.....Rent, Electricity, Gas, Phone, Cable, etc......I'm good but the Supermarket is killing me.
I've been eating Popeyes, Mcdonald, and pizza all week......I'm scared to death to go back into the Supermarket...just thinking of the accumulation of goods and the overall price puts me off......$150 don't get you a damn thing...you got to pack around $300 before stepping into a market now.
I can't help but wonder: how will economic stress on the diaspora affect remittances to families in Haiti? I've heard something like 30-35% of the Haitian economy comes from the diaspora. Any thoughts on this?
These are scary times. I hope the US learns a lesson about the need for oversight with the banking industry. Main Street is paying for the greed of Wall Street. I hope we all come through this okay.

THANK GOD I don't have a car.....
gfranc, cooking your own food save you a lot more money than purchasing it already made?

Can't cook and ladies around me can't cook as well .......I need a Haitian/Italian chick......Griyo..Fish....Pasta....Liquer.....What more can a man ask for?

.
It effects us DRASTICALLY. The remittances ae HIGHLY volatile, which is why its should never be the economic backbone of a nation.
You plan to send some money to your families in Haiti then BAM!! Gasoline skyrocketed to $5/gallon....Thus, your previous $3,000 send off turns into a $1500 send off.
what kind of ladies are you surrounding yourself with???
They ain't Hayshun?
Some.....Haitian chicks that can't cook...Can you believe that? That should be outlawed.....That's 30 days prison time.
Trinis can cook but too expensive for me.....they like to cook everything from the ground up and I'm not going to store and buy all those ingredients....I'm cheap as hell.
I have to go to the one and only Mommy and the Auntie to get some quality food......Sad I know.

I'm already sending less frequently as I used to and this is around the time when things get even more expensive so I know they are feeling it back there.
This is goin to be a rough ride guys. I just checked my 401K, and I've lost thousands of dollars over night. Remittances to Haiti will definitely be affected because you've got to help yourself before you help others. So calls from Haiti asking for a little boost here and there may go unanswered. Those who feel unaffected by all this because they "don't have stocks" should beware because the trickle-down, domino effect is a bitch, eventually gets to everyone in some way, shaape or form.
The layoffs at Lehman are just the beginning. Other industries and sectors will follow, and we'll see layoffs all over the place within weeks and months. Just make sure you keep your cool, and have a game plan.
When all you can get is lemons, you make lemonaid and enjoy.
I am sorry to hear about all those who are having such a difficult time these days ... as I too am bound to face..
But wouldn't this be a good time for those who were not invested in the markert to gamble?
This krazynes presents a ground floor entry opportunity to those who were not already in the market to lose anything at this point.
They can buy low... and hold for a while.... things are bound to ride back up and perhaps get bit stabilized.. by 2010
Many of the lost business of Leeman Brothers are bound to get picked up by Morgan Stanley, etc.. and other lessser giants...
ie: theu can pick up WAMU stock now (they're extremely low) and hold till next week... at the slightest sign of change ... dump or...
Buy actual Gold bullions now...NOT Gold stocks... Actual bullion go up in value when the $$ is down.. and vice versa... Take a gamble and sell some off when the right opportunity comes if you get what I mean by keeping a keen eye on the waves....
Some Real Estate that couldn't be had before because of thier inflated price might be a good idea now if you got the real $$$ to bail them out from owners who are having unmanagable mortgage problems and are close to foreclosure.. Its a scavenger hunt ,,,got to go to the bottom of the ocean to find the right pickings... And remember, "ENERGY" stocks always make good investment.... New Born products ... a good one too.. just as funeral business investment are... It costs to come in and gotta go out, and that costs too..
This could be a good time for those who enjoy gambling and have nothing already invested to lose. Have a good time...
In the future , They can thank the current adminstration for this opportunity to start their fortunes.....
