On Thursday, August 28th , 2008, at 4:30pm, 6:50pm and 9:15pm BAM Rose Cinemas will screen a sneak preview of the long awaited, recently completed documentary film, The Other Side of the Water.
The film follows a group of young immigrants who take an ancient music from the hills of Haiti and reinvent it on the `streets of Brooklyn. The journey of this unlikely band offers a unique insight into the Haitian-American experience—a rare glimpse into a world of roots music, traditional spirituality, and cultural activism.
A rapidly strengthing hurricane Gustav continues to bear down on Haiti, with forecasters saying it could reach Category 2 status before hitting the impoverished Caribbean country later Tuesday...But with only light rain falling in the capital, and sunny skies elsewhere, ordinary Haitians so far appeared to be taking the hurricane threat lightly.
With a newly released album, “Reference,” in full effect, BelO is raring to be heard--not just as singer/songwriter, but also as Haiti’s advocate of peace.
