PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (AP) — The Rev. Jesse Jackson is traveling in Haiti to assess aid efforts after a spate of deadly food riots.
Jackson’s Rainbow/Push Coalition says the U.S. civil rights activist is on a three-day visit to increase food aid and help draft policies to avoid further unrest.
He is meeting Haitian officials, religious leaders and aid workers. Jackson arrived Sunday and is scheduled to depart on Tuesday.
At least seven people were killed in riots this month that cost Prime Minister Jacques Edouard Alexis his job. More than half of Haiti’s nearly 9 million inhabitants live on the equivalent of less than US$2 a day.
