The Communications Office of the Prime Minister, informed the public that an order has just been published, which now prohibits the manufacture, importation, marketing and use of polythene bags in Haiti.

The bags which are ubiquitous, often end up as trash on the streets, in trees, or clogging canals and ravines. This measure is intended to help a “serious deterioration of he environment.”

Many are arguing that the change is occurring too quickly without providing alternatives, or that a better solution would be to improve Haiti’s sanitation infrastructure.
