Situated in Haiti’s North West department, Port-de-Paix (Port of Peace) is on the northern Atlantic Coast. As of 2007 there were approximately 125,000 inhabitants in this region known for the exportation of Bananas and coffee. Its deep-water port also makes it excellent for receiving many goods directly from Miami Florida.

Christopher Columbus originally named it “Valparaiso”, because of its many attractive beaches and vistas. Just across the water is Isle de La Tortue, one of Haiti’s largest islands.

Port-de-Paix’s layout is similar to that of an amphitheatre; commercial districts are near the water, while residential neighborhoods are located on the hills. It is a principal seaport and another of Haiti’s commercial centers.

The Nouveau Kiskeya development was suppose to be in Port-dePaix. Part of the development was an international airport.

Actually Port-de-Paix has a very poor infrastructure. A Drainage is almost none existant, and because it is almost isolated in the North, people are not too concerned about developing the streets. Most people concentrate on building there own personaly sanctuaries.

Great to see! What I often hear about Port-de-Paix though is the mud and "ma dlo" situation. They say puddles form everywhere and people get stuck in their houses if it has rained. Anybody know more of the situation and why exactly that is?
