Bright skies and sunshine heralded Kreyolfest 2009, the Haitian music festival sponsored by the Haitian Times newspaper, which takes place in Brooklyn like clockwork every year. Since several past editions of the festival were marred by torential downpours, a brief, barely noticeable, late-afternoon drizzle did nothing to dampen the moods of the thousands of Haitians who had gathered to see their favorite bands perform.
Several noticeable changes were made this year which seemed to have somehow made a difference. The stage was re-oriented changing the dynamics of the sound, and giving more people an unobstructed view, even while they were visiting vendor booths on the western edge of Wingate field. Also, the festival was moved back to Sunday to accomodate many New Yorkers who have prior engagements on Saturday.
Highlights of the lineup included performces by the primiere Haitian rap group Barikad Crew, a memorable dance routine by The Kreyol Dancers, a performance by Boukman Eksperyans, as well as performances by tried-and-true Haitian Compas favorites such as Do-La, Kreyol La, Carimi, Nu Look, and Djakout Mizik. Comic relief was provided by comedians Pè Chabi, Pastè Blaze and Paste William. Haitian Times founder Gary Pierre Pierre also received a New York City Citation presented by Brooklyn councilman Mathew Eugene.
