On Sunday September 21, 2008, the New York Music Industry came together at Amazura night club in Jamaica , Queens, for a concert to benefit victims in Haiti who had suffered from a series of storms and hurricanes in late summer. Despite a sparse dance floor, the venue was a cavalcade of movers and shakers in the Haitian Music Industry.
The event was a true marathon scheduled from 1pm to 4am to make it convenient for folks to participate whenever they wanted throughout the day. The goal was to raise at least $100,000. The disappointing attendance prevented that from happening, but nonetheless, music lovers were entertained by the unending flow of musical talent from all over the U.S. and Haiti.
The artists performed free of charge while the audience (including media) were charged a donation of $30. While people were partying inside the club, UNICEF volunteers outside collected material items such as food and clothing, which would soon be headed to Haiti on an airplane reserved specifically for the task.
The difference is, nd judging by your participation on this site, that you're actively involved Amber. Not so many Haitians can say the same. Not all of them have HX yet. Anyway, very great gesture of the HMI, but it wasn't done wholly IMO. Very poor advertising and more effort should have been made to reach every demographic, not just the internet savvy ones. i'm disappointed by the turnout.
Simple - No one knew about it. It is HARD to know what's really going on and when in the Haitian community (outside of Brooklyn or Queens). It shouldn't be this hard to find out information on these kind of Haitian events (or any other kind of Haitian event for that fact). If people don't know or if they find out at the last minute - it's too late and attendance will ALWAYS be low.
