Greetings fellow Haitians. It seems we are in a fix that is questioning our sovereignty. A few questions have been brewing in my head for years now is:

Are we Nationalistic enough to unite and help Haiti?  Where is Haitian Nationalism? Where will we find it? How will we find it?  What do you think?

The Haitian Flag states "Unity Makes Strength" Have we forgotten what we stood for?

It is difficult for me to speak as a “Haitian Nationalist” while living abroad. I have always maintained that the “Diaspora’s” point of view was just that, and should in no way supersede local national aspirations. I never believed the US returning Mr. Aristide to the presidency was good nor in the national interest, simply because I knew it was a bad precedent and that it would be repeated; I just didn’t think it would happen so quickly and to him. As you can see that event in my opinion was telling and I remember although we acquiesce; my brother, who today lives again in Haiti, and I in discussion thought it a bad idea, especially since a brave Haitian marine recon friend of ours Charles Smith, who served two tours of duty in Vietnam,  spent much time in US jails for violation of the neutrality act in a selfless effort to remove the despotic Papa Doc regime, the cause of my family’s misfortunes. After more than thirty years abroad without ever returning to Haiti, I still carried a Haitian passport. That too changed as a result of that event, soon after I returned from my first trip to Haiti in 2001. If you knew my history, you would know that mine is a life interrupted in Haiti. I cannot change my history; however my siblings, my cousins who have shared the same fate, some of us have come to realize: that which was interrupted in Haiti can never be regained elsewhere. We are doomed even after decades of exile to rekindle kinship with the nation and its people. I do not know the answers to your questions. I have a sister who although she has not lived in Haiti for over forty years has traveled the world using her Haitian passport including trips during the Cold War to the former Soviet Union and Communist China. After the introduction of foreign troops on Haitian soil recently, she was so disillusioned she said she would change her nationality and change her outlook for the future. I understood. I woke up that day and everyday since as I did on April 25, 1963 thinking: this is not my life. I believe my father’s staunch nationalism may have contributed to his demise, although I could never excuse those responsible for his murder nor they who have brought our nation this disgrace in 2004. Wherever they buried him if they did, I know he would be disgusted for it is how I feel. Ayiti pou Ayisyen. Koupe tet boule kay. It is amazing how one can be reviled here for writing “Koupe tet boule Kay” while no one condemns those who perpetrate on members of Fanmi Lavalas just as they failed to condemn the Makouts. The more things change, the more they remain the same. J’aime Haïti Chérie. Charles Smith, God rests his soul, forever the nationalist.

Nouveau....what nationalism?   France can enter in Haiti as an occupying force in 2004 and not one single bullet has been fired at one of them.  An Arab/Mulatto minority keeps an overwhelming black majority in slavery.

As a Haitian I only feel shame and hopelesness.  I just burned the few Haitian flags I had around the house, and no longer defends Haiti and Haitians when other nationalities bad mouth us.

My goal is to ultimately divorce myself emotionally from Haiti and Haitians. It is a little hard to do as you can tell by my presence on Haitian sites; but it is my goal nonetheless.

Papaille,

Hater gives you respect.  Hater is frustrating about the whole things, and is stopping reading about politics altogether. Rather, he is trying to make his future bright as Coolp.

Hater Guest:

Respe – I just wanted to say: don’t get discouraged. I thought Baby Doc would die in that sit. I abandoned my revolutionary zeal, mainstreamed (sold out), have the wife and two kids, eh caca happens! I have come to understand that refuting the obvious influence exerted on the planet currently by Western interests is an exercise in futility. The empires of the modern era though less discernable are increasing their control over our lives using their money to corrupt the political class manifest in the US through lobbying and political contributions, and elsewhere around the world through bribes and murder. As we enter the 21st century, exploitation remains the cornerstone of capitalism especially the laissez-faire brand of capitalism practiced in the developing nations where men and women compete with children for few jobs. Honest men and women must not allow "free market" to become synonymous with exploitation and depressed wages. I started with the man in the mirror. I made him change his ways. If we are to make the world a better we must not envy the oppressor and we should choose none of his ways. I fear for the generations that follow. I thank Manitou that I am on my way out. The signs are all around us: electronic surveillance, finger imaging, credit/debit cards, passports etc..., etc. Resistance is futile. You will be assimilated. Even that could be tolerated if we could just have poverty without so much misery. Hope however springs eternal, I have more ties to Haiti today than I did just three years ago, and for me that's a good thing.
