Today marks the anniversary of the death of Toussaint L'ouverture.  This grand occassion is being celebrated in Cap Haitien, Jacmel, La Gonave Ganthier, Hinche and Maribalais as I write this.  Each town is celebrating the hero in there own distinct way.  Today, April 7, Toussaint L'Ouverture becomes a national holiday in France.  France will commemorate and hold celebrations in honor of Toussaint from now untill late November.  The death of Toussaint L'Ouverture is probably the most important pre-requisite to the bicentenial.

I read the news item on Sakapfet, and it seems the 1804 guy may simply be having a problem wth the French language (the article is in French.) Although there will be commemorative celebrations until the end of the year, nowhere does it mention anything about France making it a national holiday. Also, just use your head, why would they create a national holiday for someone who they had to murder because kicked their butts?

Trust me, most of white France doesn't even know who Toussaint was or exactly where Haiti is.
