First off, I like many here, am a Haitian American female. One of my best friends is Dominican. She looks white, but is far from it. She is always talking a/b learning kreyol (she almost has it down) and loves the Haitian Culture. She is even the secretary of our Haitian Culture Club, at my school. There is no need to get amped a/b stupidness over Dominicans hating Haitians, only because only some do. If you ever have a chance, read "In the Time of the Butterflies", by Julia Alvarez, and you'll get to see what made the Dominicans start hating their African side. A dictator, believe it or not, can seriously change a country's POV, and if people don't start realizing it, it's just like he's still ruling. So instead of hating them back, we should do what my Haitian Culture Club does, and EDUCATE about the trueness of being what we are. If it takes a teen to tell people what to do, you know that country has a lot of growing up to do. Haiti may have been the first INDEPENDENT black nation , but it is far from grown. The Caribbean as a whole, needs to grow and mature. Free or not, we're being held down by prejudices, and at least, we should take the example of the U.S., and try to rise over it, and demand our respect. There will never be respect for us, if we first, don't start respecting ourselves. |
