Black Alex!
Damn...that brother had a crazy, crazy voice, but he definately baught some much needed animation to Haitian music. He was usually the sledgehammer that broke up the monotone flow in some kompa songs. My favorite memory of black Alex is his part on the Misik Mizik 2001 or 2002 Kananval. I forgot which one. But I mean he riped that song. In general Mizik Mizik Kanaval 2001 or 2002 is the song of all Carnivals from Haiti to Brazil, it's a song for the ages. Black Alex does this thing with his voice where his voice blends with the bass, the song is moveing and all of a sudden he comes in "Nan moment, tout moun ape dance! Dance! Nan Moment tout moun ape shante! shante! Cherie! Cherie! Cherie! mwen paka gade'w nan je'w chak fwa mwen gade'w mwen gen yon maladie d'amou, Cherie! Cherie! Cherie! ou coneim paka kembe, shak fwa nou fe l'amou se bwa'm ka pe fleuri! You cant make out the anamation of these words by looking at them, but when he sings them, it's like a glass of soda overflowing with bubbles. If you want classic Black Alex, look for that song and also check for his work with King Posse. On the Haitiendo album he turns Guantanamara into sakap pase'la! I feel he was definately needed and left way way way to early. Rumor has it he was liveing the fast life and not watching his health. Smoking, drinking and partying every night and disregarding his turburculosis. He will be missed
R.I.P Black Alex!
