Hey guys i've been observing for quite a time now, why is that the only city who universities is P-au-P i don't understand. Isn't this the cause of P-au-P being over crowded.

Would someone please tell me what they think about this please

what should have benn done in the past, was not done, that's why port-au-prince becomes over populated like that, because in other departments in the country like( north,north-west,north-east,plateau central,south,south-east,grand'anse) they all have no universities, from those departments listed above, when a student is done with high-school in his home-town,what happens next,he or she gotta go to portauprince anyway to continue his or her study.

now what the current gorverment should do now,it should do a decentralization system, which means, building some universities in every department and in the future port-au-prince will be less crowded.

The reason Port-au-Prince is overcrowded is much more complicated than the fact that it is where the universitie are located. As a matter of fact, everything was centralized in Port-au-Prince during the American occupation of Haiti. Before the Americans came, Port-au-Prince was more important, but not that much more important than other cities such as Jacmel and Cap Haitien.

With increased invstment in Port-au-Prince and dwindling investment in the countryside, a mass influx of peasants to the city to find jobs, continues to increase Port-au-Prince's population yearly.

Like many other problems, the Haitian government is very aware of this problem and has started implementing decentralization solutions. But as usual, they have to get their "ish" together first before they can tackle it effectively.

Pipe45;  Negnwe is correct, there are many reasons for centralisation and the overcrowding of Potoprins.

Centralisation is a problem in many countries in different stages of development.  Look at the following percentages of a few selected country's populations that live in the capital city/largest city.

Buenos Aires; 35%  .....  Kingston: 30%....   Santiago (Chile): 28%...  Dakar: 26%...   Santo-Domingo: 25%  ....  Potoprins: 23%

Imagine The New York metropolitan area with 50+ million residents as opposed to the 14+million.

Potoprins is overcrowded because there has been no urban planning and no upgrading of basic infrastructure.  Some say the city is only equiped to support a population of 350,000.  It has 5 to 7 times that number.

Guest;  Thank You for the compliment but I must disagree with you.  This site has many intelligent and educated posters. That is the reason I participate.  Many of us have knowledge in different areas and as you know there are different types of intelligence.  Check out the postings by Chemin Flambert, Tibob, Amberabdias, Tijou, NegNwe, Patati Patata, and others.  I have learned a lot from these people.

As for my age,  ......... lets do this.  Go to www.haitianconnection.com  look for REALKREYOLBRO  and assign me any age you see fit.

Listen guys i really agree of what all of you is saying but don't you think that the government has to much to do. Not i'm on their side, as you can see my hometown is not really depend on the government 100% but they also participate and make the city better and i can also tell there is much to come.

What i think is that many rich people in Haiti doesn't care about what happen to the country and all they care about is filling their own packet. It's not about centralization, all it's about its if  we care enough to come and protest about it i think we can solve this problem. I think this is a problem who can solve but it's not going to be solve right now until someone put it's heart out and start doing it.

Guys please tell me waht do you think about i say.

Would someone please get all the facts straight here about Universities being exclusively in Port-au-Prince? Please?

I don't know much about the other provinces, but being from Jacmel, I'm always getting updates on all fronts regarding the progress of that particular city. The last time I checked (I was in Haiti last month), L'Université Notre Dame fonctionne aussi à Jacmel depuis sous le gouvernement de Préval. And I believe there's another university to have started this fall semester in Jacmel.

My organization and I are building a university in Haiti now (UNIVERSITE DE L'EXCELLENCE HAITIENNE), still in its infancy stage. We have all the lands required for now to build the offices (which are already in construction) and we are in the process of doing the million things necessary and the 13 million contacts everywhere to fully establish it by the end of next year.

All of the posts above touched the reality. It's a demographic factor as well as an economic one. There're more people in Port-au-Prince with the age band to go to University and more of those people are willing and financially capable of attending colleges. Even though the main campus is sited in the outskirts of Port-au-Prince (Cabaret, since that's where we werve given the land), our plan in the next 5 years or so is to extend it to all the remaining 8 main provincial cities of the country.

One of my sisters, 2 years ago, was working on a project to build an international university in Jacmel in collaboration with an international body. Things didn't work as planned since my sister -patriotically Haitian to the point of folly- rejected some of the conditions the international NGOwere imposing. Everything is not in the water to date, but the movement came to an abrupt act since about a few months ago. I'm pretty sure there should be other people we don't know about in the other provinces that are doing the same.

As of now (and until convinced otherwise), Port-au- Prince is NOT the only city with university in Haiti. (Jacmel is one of them and it's ironic that this thread started with a "neg jacmel")
