In 1964, I visited Haiti, and had the great opportunity to hear Tiroro play the vodou drum at the Orlofson Hotel. I though it a fantastic experience. Upon returning to New Orleans, I found that Nonsuch records had a recording of Tiroro playing the drum. I purchased it, and many people asked to borrow it. One of them did not return the recording. I wish very much to find again a recording of Tiroro. Since my grandson is taking up precussion - I would like for him to hear a truly great artist, Tiroro. I have two pictures I took of Tiroro on that occasion in 1964. Any information about Tiroro or recording of his work would be greatly appreciated.

Wow, i've heard about tiroro but never heard his music.  Try typing "tiroro haitian drummer" in google or something.

I don't think he is alive anymore. I could be wrong though.

Thank all of you for your responses, I would guess that Tiroro was about my age (72 now), and possibly still alive, but if not well known in Haiti, then he surely is not still playing the drum. The employees of the Orlofson and I were the only ones who heard him play on that occasion. He told me that there were drum Patterns (?) for "everything" and that he had just played "SOLIEL" - a very happy recital. So I asked him, by way of contrast to play "MORT". He did not want to, but finally agreed. It was almost terrifying;the hotel employees drapped themselves over chairs and I felt strange dark creatures all about. I took two color slides of him playing the soliel, and am trying to have them printed - he was sitting in the shade.

To the young student, I am very pleased to read that your parents may have a recording. I hope that we can make some arrangement. But please contact me first through the Hatian exchange, as I receive 80 to 100 spams a day and unless I knew your eMail address, I would most inadvertently delete it. (I live in a rather remote part of Hawaii, and do much shopping via internet, and results in the deluge of spam). Hope to hear from you soon, Best, Fred

Thank you, Ti Jou, it would be very kind of you to send me the information. And to Chemin Flambert, I followed your suggestion, and google came up with a web site - Santeria Music Database - which listed an album - Tiroro, Haitian Drummer - but trying to get further information the reply was URL inadequate. I shall continue to follow this lead. I would hope that someone someday could collect information about this great artist who it seems to me to be a true treasure of Haiti, and if better known, a world treasure.

I read online somewhere about tiroro when I was trying to look for the best conga players in Haiti.  They didn't go into grave details.  If I ever come across something, I will post it here.
