Kreyolman;

Good points, get back to us with what Haitians should wear in the Northeast.

I have a few suggestions; we could all wear a straw hat, or a "Pepe Bayard" over our winter coat, or tatoo a veve on our forehead, or my favorite; wear six different colors at once.  You know something that will scream HAITI.

Hey if the Hasidic Jews, the Sikhs, the Indus and others can have distinguishing clothing, why can't we.

Brothers and Sisters please come forward with the ideas.

L'haitien est avant tout: Indien, Africain, espagnol, Francais, Anglais, Polonais, Arab, American.

You can choose which one you want to be, but do not impose your choice on me! Do not take my words. Read your history and your literature.

So, KreyolMan, why don't you give us examples on how true Haitians should dress? Hey, don't get me wrong. I agree with your point that a lot of Haitians copy the African-American culture too much. But what's a true Haitian to wear? Guayabel? As far as I know that's not even Haitian. Let me know my friend, educate me.

Kreyolman,

Qu'est-ce-que l'haitien?

Who/what  is a Haitian.

I know that for some of us the sensitively correct answer could be: African. But it would be culturally and historically wrong.

If you want to know who you are so that you can enlighten others, that's fine. But if you want to know so that you know what to wear, you are short -cutting yourself. I want to look good  in whatever I wear. I like carabela ( gros bleu),  I like pepebaya, I like boyo ( shoes) because they are soft, but you would not catch me dead with a hat on my head ( straw hat or Versace hat)  because I hate hats. I like Polo, Prada, Gucci.

" L'habit ne fait les Moines" brother. You should know who you are no matter what you are wearing and be able to articulate it to others. If you are wearing a Caraco and cannot enlighten others, you are only making a fool of yourself. The reverse is alse true. If you can enlighten others, it does not matter what you wear.

On a last note. Maybe when we achieve political and economic clouts like the Asidic Jews, we 'll be able to express and show our gamets of cultural attire and be respected. For now, brother, let's just bland in a take care of our business

No one is one thing.

I admit that there are something in the above messages that I don't understand b/c it is not English. But, why does it matter to dress as a Haitian? You are not what you wear. The qualities of Haitian are reflected by the thinking, language, traditional, way of living and cultural activities...I mean things deeper in the MIND. You can wear a kimono, but it doesn't tell people that you ara a Japanese like me....just my two cents.

I'm totaly agree with all the borthers on top but I want to just precise that what I really want to say by my message is , that's true that it's our thinking who is the more important to keep our culture alive but i'm scared that the next generation who will born in america will forget their culture.

My Dear Haitian Friends,

I am not haitian.  Altough I`ve lived only 2 years as a complete white canadian male in Montrouis, Côtes-Aux-Arcadins, I feel more haitian than lots of haitian of blood.

I agree with 2 statements:

  • Why haitians are looking to ressemble to the other blacks from USA.  Not that they are all bad but it`s true that haitians outta of haiti especially should have their own identity.
  • But it is also true that dressing haiti style won`t necessarely help.  Each haitian, before being haitian have their own style they are human beings and this is something more important than anything else.  The fact of being haitian are a social state and something to live in your heart and mine it really doesn`t matter how you dress.

I will also talk about another sad fact: Crime rate!!!! Guys we have to raise our heads and show the world that haitians and blacks are not equal to criminals.

The thing is more a community is targeted the more it`s gotta be careful with its social actions.

Hopefully I gave enough matter for many to think.  I wish you all, the best and peace in your heart forever.

Regards

Alain Richard

Alain Richard

Maybe I am missing some information; I have never heard Haitians equated with criminals.  Is this a Canadian phenomenon?    Please inform.
