Wow! "What is Konpa?" I guess that's a legitimate question for someone who has never heard it before. Here are some links I dug up on this site that might help you out. They are for record reviews which contain some music samples. Don't stop there, do a search on Google or something for more examples:

Konpa is a monotonous sounding genre that a Haitian, Nemours Jean-Baptiste invented around 1955.  The original konpa hardly exists anymore. Today's konpa is more computerized and boring. Listen for yourself.  Guarantee you that if you are not Haitian, you will get bored with konpa in less than a year.  :) Just being real.

Chemin,

Come on man. You're always being so hard on Konpa. Although I've always heard Konpa as a kid growing up in NYC, I started really listening to it and enjoying it about 3 years ago. I used to be all into Hip-Hop and stuff, but now I'm grown up adn that's all over. I love Konpa. When I listen to it, it reminds me of being in Haiti. I know the stuff that's out now is not like what our parents used to listen to, but that's how things go. Music, like everything else, evolves.

You don't have to be so negative and biased against Konpa. If you s don't like it, just say so and leave it at that.

Respekte Kokorat!

Kokorat if that is what you call an evolution then we are in trouble.  Things are supposed to evolve, true but things are supposed to get better not worse.  You think I always listened to konpa? NOOOOOO! I listened to Hip Hop and R&B.  Then I started to listen to konpa and yes I liked it too but after a couple months, I got tired of the new stuff and started getting a taste of the old stuff. The old stuff was great but after a while you say well it is not being produced like that anymore. I really would like the newer generation of Haitians to start thinking bigger and start creating REAL good Haitian music...it is not happening right now.  So many of us are liking konpa because we are Haitian and it was created by Haitians. This is wrong for anything.  Just because something is Haitian doesn't mean we should support it. Why? Well, when it is Haitian but it is not good, our supporting it promotes mediocrity. Mediocrity is something that is really killing us Haitian peeps right now. It is almost as if we are stuck in time in almost everything.  Kokorat, my opinion is that first of all this konpa is not konpa at all but another genre. Second of all I believe it sucks and it is only good for Haitians to LOVE.  That is terrible for a group of people who want to remove themselves from isolation.  Konpa is hardly caribbean sounding and I will  always say it is bad until a new genre comes out. Se konsa fre'm...as long as there is something to complain about we will complain. I do not dislike konpa because it is Haitian or whatever. I stated my reasons over and over and I will continue to state them so more and more people can open their eyes and ears to what i'm saying. That way more people can join me and we can force these musicians to give us something better or not try at all.

Kokorat, some people choose to like what is given to them and they do not look for better. I'm a true progressiveist when it comes to our culture and I believe we made a wrong turn in many things.  If you look at this site you will see how beautiful it was constructed and how the administrators go out of there way to keep bringing all kinds of things to the site.  Then you will see a whole bunch of members on this site that hardly speak about anything but fests, models musicians etc.  It is like we can not speak about something serious. All the serious posts are ignored while we sit and speak about some fest or something over and over again. It is as if Haitian people are all about the banboche.  Where are the creative minds? It goes much deeper than konpa kokorat...it is in our mind..something that makes us not want to change for the better. It is a cancer. I really respect administrators of this site because they have done more than alot of the other haitian sites i've seen. Konpa is a direct representative of how us Haitians are doing now and how Haiti is doing...agree?  Konpa was invented in the fifties when Haiti was on some road to development.  Haiti was calmer, and not as lawless as it is today.  Se te belle epoque and that is when beautiful music was created kokorat. Despite the repressive regime of Papa Doc Haiti had tourism the best Kanaval and everything...man try to think about how it was at those times how beautiful things were. Then, think about now. Because of Vodou we should have a plethora of rhythms to incorporate in a genre like konpa instead of concentrating it on rasinn. JUST LIKE HAITI LACKS ORGANIZATION AND GOOD GOVERNANCE, AS DOES THE HAITIAN MUSIC INDUSTRY AND OTHER THINGS HAITIAN.  Dig me?
