After reading the interview with Tyrone, an incident came to mind that occurred back when I was going to college in the Boston area. A friend of mine and I went into a Wendy's fast food restaurant where two female cashiers were talking amongst themselves. Although I really wasn’t paying attention, I overheard one of them say “Oh Haitians ain’t cute, I ain’t never met no cute Haitians.” Even though it was none of my business, back then I was hot-headed, and had to say something.
So I turned around to my friend and said real loud so everyone in the restaurant could hear me: “Well, at least I don’t see any Haitians making minimum wage behind this counter!” Well, after the girls got mad, they went and got their manager and he came over and asked us to leave. Even after I told him why I said what I said, he said there was no reason to disrespect his entire crew like that. My friend and I took our time and ate our food thinking the police or some type of security was going to storm in at any minute. When we were done, we left peacefully under the glares and snide remarks of the minimum wage-earning, Wendy’s crew.
As someone previously mentioned, I find us to be such an attractive people and hopefully with the help of Tyrone and Garcelle, the world will realize this also. I just wanted to share this memory with HaitiXchange readers. |
