It's been a while since I've given an update, but we've been doing a lot and I haven't had the time to look for internet access. Anyway, this trip is turning out to be the most awesome trip I've ever taken to Haiti. On December 31, we partied at the Oloffson Hotel till the break of dawn (RAM performed), only to wake up early to show up in front of the Palais National the next day for the Bicentennial festivities.

The palace gates broke due to the crowd out front and people were standing right on the palace lawn as Aristide was speaking (something that would never happen in the US!!) After a while, people started rushing the palace and it got kind of scary for a few moments. (I got a small cut on my hand, and my friend lost his cell phone in the melee.) The ceremony continued, however, and Aristide was then whisked to Gonaives.

Throughout the day there were demonstrations by the opposition, and squirmishes with the police. We had to be careful where we went and took detours whenever possible. Although we saw tires burning, the demonstrations were very disorganized and did not disrupt the city.

Yesterday we spent the day at Kaliko Beach and today, we flew to Cap Haitien and went straight to the Citadelle. AWESOME!!! Truely one of the wonders of the world. My back still hurts from riding a horse all the way up the hill, but I'll be ok.

Tomorrow, we're going to Labadee for some relaxation, then back to PAP, next to Jacmel, and then back to the US.

Anyway, this PC isn't working too well and this cyber center is suffering all types of power failures (Blackawout!), so even though I have a lot more to say, I'll be signing off. We're off to check out Au Cap nightlife.

Tibob and others; forget that Road Building Project, we need suspended cable cars to take people to the top of the Citadelle.  Those poor underfed mules and horses have had enough.

Kreyolbro, you will spend the rest of your life forgetting every project you have started if at every news of an unfortunate situation in Haiti your heart jumps to your brains. It's one at a time and it's not us all the times for everything.

"Ceci n'empêche pas cela" (this doesn't prevent that). You can still go ahead and form a thousand other committees for the first most important thousand immediate needs the country has. But your efforts will not make the roads better. Roads and Road improvement are necessary whether mules, horses or suspended cable cars ride back and forth to Citadelle.

Good point Tibob

But I can't stop my heart from jumping...that's the kind of guy I am. So today I am starting The suspended cable car to the Citadelle because our underfed mules and horses have had enough project.

We will call it TSCCTTCBOUMHHHE pronounced Teestsboomee

Today finds us back in Port-au-Prince after a slightly bumpy plane ride back from Cap Haitian. We spent a night at Norms Place, a small guest house built in one of the bays at Labadee. This place is not accessible by road and has absolutely no cars!! There is virtually no crime and whenever Au Cap or PAP get heated, the locals are never affected. Very relaxing. We left this morning as a huge Royal Caribbean vessel moored and let thousands of passengers off at a gated resort, seperated from the rest of Haiti by a huge fence. (The poor souls have no idea what they are missing and may not even realize they are in Haiti!!)

We are currently at the Villa Creole hotel in the heart of Petionville and Port-au-Prince seems to have finally gotten over the wave of protests and demonstrations. Everything seems back to normal and people are not as tense as they were last week.

We will be getting up early tomorrow to go to Jacmel which will be very interesting to those who have never been there. The trip is almost over and I'm not really looking forward to coming back to my bills, my job, my nosey neighbors, or winter!!

P.S. For anyone who can get a hold of it, "Le Nouvelliste" has written a great article about the HaitiXchange trip. It is very well written and emphasizes the fact that visitors were present en masse for the celebrations, despite the country's mayhem. Look out for it on page 2 of the latest issue.

Explosions Rock Petionville!

I know I just posted, but I've got to tell you guys what just happened here in Petionville. The entire neighborhood was just rocked by a series of massive exlosions resulting from a house which somehow caught on fire. Apperently some propane tanks within the structure have been exploding lighting up the sky and sending a huge inferno higher and higher.

The worst of it is, that the house is right accross the street from a Texaco gas station. (The one right near Munchies Restauraunt and Harry's.) When I heard the first explosion, I ran out with my camera and started taking pictures. The one fire truck that showed up couldn't do anything about the fire. In the meantime, propane tanks (or whatever was in the house) kept of exploding, causing car alarms to go crazy.

As I continued taking pictures, a police officer told me to back up and go back where he had told me to go to (mind you he never spoke to me before) and violently shoved me in the opposite direction from the hotel. I told him that my hotel was the other way and he said something like "Fout med, mwen pap di'w enko!![Hell I won't tell you again.!]" I stopped taking pictures, and went in the direction he had told me to go in. Cops then just started going crazy on spectators and started shoving and pushing. Another cop aske me if I was a journalist and I said "No." He left me alone. I then just hid out in a little corner, and rushed back to the hotel while the cop who had shoved me wasn't looking.

In front of the entrance to the street leading to the hotel, many people were just watching, then started scattering as the police started approaching with their cars and batons. Another explosion went off, and I darted down the street, into the hotel where I am right now.

Man!!

I got my first taste of journalism in this country and I don't like it one bit!! As I write this, I'm just waiting for the Texaco station, and the whole neighborhood, to go up in flames. Also, although most of the cops here a good people, some have absolutely no idea how to handle crisis and stress. I'm gonna try to go to sleep, and will let you know what happened the next time I post. Good night

Wow! So unfortunate, coolp. The fire and the cops' immaturity to deal with stress. Their first response is always that of an instinctive being.

I hope everything goes fine. Another reason to have planned more time in Jacmel than in PAP.

kreyolbro, I guess you meant to be sarcastic but it's hard to find an excuse to laugh.

I pity you for your undertaking. You seem to have cross personalities since you're doing such a marvelous job deriding your own idea. I'm glad one of your personalities realizes the stupidity of your other personality's project so quickly.

I'm also sure you are laughing your heart out. You are so funny! A career in stand-up comedy may be the thing for you.
