Hi...I am a 32 year old male, who was born in Brooklyn, NY. For the past five years I have been trying to embrace my culture.  Although my parents are Haitian I still feel a bit insecure speaking their native language because my Haitian cousins think that I speak it funny. Can someone offer some helpful adice on how I can speak, read and wirte Kreole. Thanks in advance!!!

Practice, pratcice, practice!

Guest, I was in the same situation until I started making a really big effort to start speaking Kreyòl. People told me the same thing; "Ou pale Kreyòl funny", but I didn't care. As long as they understood me, I figured I must have been doing a good job. I started watching a lot of Haitian movies and making a concious effort to listen to the way people spoke and the expressions that they used. Since I live in New York City, it is very easy to find places where people speak Kreyol (like the local barbershops and churches), and although I still have a slight Diaspora accent...

Kounye-a, mwen pale Kreyòl pi bon pase papa'm!!

Thanks Neg Nwe..... I too have been going to a barber shop on flatbush and I did find that it did help, but I thought there were books on this topic. I also listen to a lot of compas (Zin, carime & T-vice) and to some degree it has helped.

Again I apreciate the advice

Remy

Yo! What berbershop do you go to? I go to a barbershop on Flatbush too. Let me find out we're going to the same barbershop!

But anyway, to answer your question, there are some books to help people learn how to speak Kreyol, but I think they are really for beginners. You are probably too advanced for them. There is a guy named Deslande Rincher who publishes many Kreyol language and reference books. You can find his store on Church Avenue between Bedford and Nostrand avenues in Brooklyn. If you need the exact address, you might be able to look it up. I think it's called "Rinchers Books".

I THINK THE BEST THING TO DO BESIDES GOING TO PLACES WHERE A LOT OF KRYEOL IS ACTUALLY SITTING DOWN OR SPEAKING KREYOL TO SOMEONE FROM START TO FINISH. TRY NOT TO USE ANY ENGLISH WORDS. MAYBE IT WILL HELP YOU.
